From the March/April issue of the Clan Cameron Online Newsletter
(Association Branches are encouraged to post this message in their own newsletters, and to circulate word of this competition.)
In years gone by the Clan Cameron was a poetic Highland race. Bards, first from throughout Lochaber and later hailing from all corners of the globe, would put pen to paper when their hearts were stirred. Their writings celebrated the Cameron ancestral homeland, their loyal ancestors, and of course the chief, Lochiel.
While many of these works have now been preserved in the Clan Cameron Archives (www.clan-cameron.org/archives.html) recent years have seen a noticeable downturn in poetry. With this in mind the worldwide branches of the Clan Cameron Association, in conjunction with the Camerons of Lochiel, have initiated The Cameron Poetry Prize.
To commence the 2003 competition Donald Angus Cameron, Younger of Lochiel and Lord Lieutenant of Inverness, has related the following:
"The Lochiel family is delighted to support this innovative and artistic project which, hopefully, will produce imaginative and colourful poems. Depending on the quality of the response, winning poems may be added to the Cameron archives so that they will be available to future generations. So, all you budding poets, remember Wordsworth who said 'Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings: it takes its origins from emotion recollected in tranquility.'"
Suggested subject matter, related to Camerons, may include:
- The Clan, in general
- Camerons of Lochiel
- Cameron ancestry
- Lochaber/"Cameron Country"
- The Highlands
- Emigration
The Cameron Poetry Prize is an open competition meant for anyone with a desire to share their creativity, not just Camerons or those of Cameron septs. Entries shall be accepted up until November 1, 2003 and will be judged by a panel consisting of officers from the various international branches of the Clan Cameron Association, and the Lochiel family.
This year's winner(s) will receive prominent recognition on Clan Cameron Online, in addition to a signed certificate from Lochiel. Entries will also receive consideration for inclusion into the Clan Cameron Archives, ensuring that quality poetic works of today are preserved for Cameron enthusiasts of the future.
In that the Cameron Poetry Prize is open to those both on and off-line, all entries must be sent via traditional postal service. E-mailed entries will not be accepted. Please submit all entries to:
