What "generic" tartans are acceptable for Camerons to wear? I know that, for instance, some clans have a taboo against wearing the black watch. Are there any tartans that can be worn by several clans that Camerons should/should not wear?

There are many "generic" tartans that are acceptable for anyone to wear. Any of the regional tartans , Caledonia for example, would be O.K. to wear. I have a book at home that details what you should & should not wear. There are also a number of web sites where you can find that info. As for the Black Watch tartan- some Clans may find it distasteful because of its association with Clan Campbell - or because of the history of the Black Watch itself, being the regulators of the Hanoverian Government in the Highlands during the 1700's. Although some of you may have noticed from my posts a SLIGHT amount of resentment on my part with respect to certain branches of that traitorous Clan, I have a different perspective on that particular tartan. My Grandfather, Charles Russel Cameron, was a member of the 85th Battalion, Nova Scotia Highlanders during WW1. My grandfather was wounded at Valenciennes in October of 1918. They were a Kilted Battalion (and wore the Kilt in battle). The tartan was the Black Watch. I would now wear that tartan with pride to honour my grandfather and his Battalion (who served with distinction - they were known as "the Never Fails") freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~easternpassage/85th.htmlAlthough I would wear the Black watch tartan - I could never bring myself to affix a black cockade to my cap - even though my grandfathers regimental badge was fastened to one. As a Cameron I would think the whole discussion would be academic - with a number of Cameron tartans available to us (Clan Cameron, Hunting, Erracht) why would anyone want to wear a generic tartan? With the exception of Lochiel's own tartan any of the above may be properly worn by any member of the Clan. My personal preference is the Clan Cameron - I think it is the most striking of the Clan tartans. wear it with pride! Slainte, John

I myself also wear Clan Cameron. The question is interesting for me in an academic sense, I'm not very heavy on clan history (as our family has only recently discovered it's heritage mabye ten years ago). In addition, I need a tartan which I can find for rent for my best man in my wedding next summer. He has no Scots heritage that he knows of. In the meantime, I am still going around it with my fiance that his kilt does not have to be based on red to match mine she fully supports bringing my heritage into our wedding, but still dosn't quite get the full picture.

I would tend to get your best man a Cameron tartan kilt, unless you feel strongly that he shouldn't wear it. It is a Clan Cameron wedding. You could make him an "honourary" Cameron for a day.
Otherwise - where is he from? You may find there is a tartan for his particular region/state that he could wear as "his" tartan. I know that several of the Canadian provinces have their own tartans (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Alberta are the ones I'm familiar with). The Caledonia tartan I mentioned earlier is very nice - colourful, and is appropriate for anyone.
When I was in Scotland a few years ago, I bought my daughter a Kilt that was "Lochaber" tartan. It was very nice as well.
I guess it comes down to personal preference, and I wouldn't let "rules" interfere with what makes you and your bride to be happy.
Good Luck!

hello:
I have a philmhor or great kilt, 4 yards of 60" plaid and 30" by 4 yards for a philabeg, the big one is Blackwatch and Thompson Grey for the philabeg. But as the only unclaimed Thompson sett is the grey I do not have to be mistaken as an MacTavish.
The Scottish National sett can be rented from any of the kilt-hire companys, and offends no one. So if you can not find the sett by famly just rent the National sett.

As to military tartans. As far as I know, you only wear a regimental tartan if you were in that regiment. Many Camerons have served and are serving in the Black watch, so I don't see the problem. It is a long time since the Black watch has been seen by us in Scotland as a repressive regiment. I myself wear Clan Cameron.
