I am writing as I have done before to see whether anyone is familiar with any lands in India or the West Indies involving tea plantations owned by the Cameron's of Lochiel.
I am Sue Catterall, Vice President of Clan Cameron NSW and according to my Cameron family, especially my grandfather Alfred Cameron that a will had been stolen in either India (he always said India - I thought it could be the West Indies).
My Great Grandfather Hector Cameron "Breelong" (Armidale, NSW)had received word from overseas (from where I do not know). He booked his trip to Scotland but unfortunately on his way in to buy his ticket to Scotland his horse bolted and threw him onto the ground where he died. No-one in the family went back to claim what was rightfully theirs. It was evidently land etc.
My family are supposedly descended from the Gentle Lochiel and we have been told we are Lochiel Camerons. I also connect to another branch of Cameron's who are cousins to me through my McRae's of Kintail. My Cameron branches and McRae's most of them reside on the original pioneering grazing properties in New England, NSW. Others of course now have moved further afield.

My last name is spelled "Cambron" and just starting out reading it looks as if it once were spelled Cameron. So, lets see what I can read and learn on the Cameron history. Glad to be on board....Christy Cambron

Hi Sue,
I think we can be fairly definite in accepting that the Will was not stolen by someone in the Lochiel family,or that Hector would be the beneficiary of a Lochiel family Will - your family would be so remote from any blood connection to them, that there would be thousands in the queue ahead of Hector to receive any benefit.
I see from the Genealogical Data on the Clan Cameron Australian Website that Hector was 75/76 when he died in 1911,and that the large family that he came from originated from very modest means in Morvern,Scotland,in the early 1800s.
My guess would be that either someone played a cruel joke on Hector,or that more likely, some distant cousin who had remained in Scotland (or had worked abroad in the West Indies or India),had left money or possessions to their nearest relatives - Hector's family in Australia.
Given that your Camerons came from Morvern, there is a chance that they were descendants of Donald Cameron of Glendessary, younger son of Allan Cameron of Lochiel, who was granted lands in Ardnamurchan and Sunart (adjacent to Morvern) in the 1650s.His large family spread it's tentacles out over the whole area over the next 100 years.I don't think it is likely that you are descended from the Gentle Lochiel, unfortunately.
Regards,Chris.

This is about TWINS in CAMERON families. I have embarked on this search, hoping it will reveal my earlier ancestors from Scotland. It is a genetic trait and has shown itself in Canada in my family. 1827, 1886, 1946, 1960. I have found a strong Twin family in Queensland, but from Ayrshire, Scotland, originally. Mine would be from Inverness-shire, Scotland and of Clan Lochiel. The earliest I have found in Inverness-shire are Angus ,b 1795 ,son of Kenneth Cameron, Kilmonivaig. He was ancestor of that line according to Dr. Robert and I have not been able to reach further back in time. Any twins out there ? Delphine Cameron Large Canada
