Hello from "downunder". The surname Lonie is quite common here too. It is possibly related to the MacGhillonies of Strone but could also be a contraction from other Scots surnames like Auchterlonie etc. If your ancestors came from Lochaber they probably were part of the MacGhillonies- one of the founding familiesof Clan Cameron. Strone is right in the middle of the Cameron heartland. Slainte! Ailean glas.

The name Lonie does not appear in the comprehensively impressive compilation of Scottish surnames by George Black PhD, 'The Surnames of Scotland', perhaps confirming the comment that Lonie is a contraction of Auchterlonie (not Cameron so far as I am aware) or of MacGillonie. Other versions of MacGillonie are MacGilloney, MacAloney, Macalonie, Macalonavie, and even Milloney. The latter is an anglification of the root of the name and is derived from Maelanfaidh (the ancient Lochaber tribe that the Camerons are said to have married in to and therefore Camerons are descended from). Black has many references to Maelanfaidh, MacGillonie, MacAloney etc., as does John Stewart in his 'The Camerons: A History of the Clan Cameron'. Although his views on the Camerons are controversial, The Rev. Somerled MacMillan in his 'Bygone Lochaber' researched a considerable body of material on the MacGillonies or MacAloney's.
If you are unsure of the source of Lonie you should try to trace back wards to see if they are tied to Lochaber. I hope this helps? Regards,
