I am researching the history of the MacGillonie Camerons and shall appreciate it if anyone with material would share it via this thread or directly via my e-mail: Graeme.Macaloney@hotmail.com.
The MacGillonie’s were also known as MacAloney’s, Gillonie’s, Millonay’s, Macalonvies, M’lonvie’s, McOlonie’s, Maelanfaidh, etc. The name in Gaelic is MacGillonfhaidh and is derived from the ancient name and race of Lochaber, the Maelanfhaidh who represent the original Cameron genealogy.
They were domiciled mainly in Strone, Glen Mallie, Glen Loy, Muirshierlich, Inveruiskvullin, Barr, Invermallie, and perhaps Glenpeanbeg and Banavie
I already have used the following useful sources: George Black’s ‘Surnames of Scotland’, John Stewart’s ‘The Camerons: A History of the Clan’, Somerled MacMacmillan’s ‘Bygone Lochaber’, William Drummond Norie & Alice MacDonell’s ‘Loyal Lochaber and its Associations; Historical, Genealogical and Tranditionary’, William Kilgour’s ‘Lochaber in War and Peace’, Alexander Mackenzie’s ‘History of the Camerons’, William Skene’s ‘The Highlanders of Scotland’, Ewen Cameron’s ‘Memoirs of Sir Ewen Cameron of Locheill’ and the fifteenth century collection of Highland Pedigrees known as ‘MS 1467’ as discussed in William Skene’s ‘Celtic Scotland’and elsewhere.
