Here's another stumper... All I know is that it was on the Lochiel Estate, circa 1788. Any thoughts, theories or ideas would be wonderful for this "Lost Lochaber" mystery.

Hi Tom,
Coanich lay on the north side of Loch Arkaig,a few miles east of Murlaggan.
Cheers,Chris.

Thanks again for this one Chris! As with Sallachan, might you have a way to identify the specific location on a modern Ordanance Survey map? I'm attempting to pin down these locations for both the online Reference Guide and also a mapping project I'm working on.

Argh....grid references - something I haven't done since school!Hope I can get it right, and it matches up with the Ordnance Survey Map that you have of the Loch Arkaig area.I have taken these references off an old One Inch Map (circa 1950),so here goes - vertical reference first(I think that is how it is done).:
GLENPEANMORE - 901/925. GLENPEANBEG - 903/935. GLENDESSARY: -COUL/CHUIL - 924/945. -SHANAVAL - 932/955. -CLACKFERN - 923/967. LAGGANFERN - 905/982. KINLOCHARKAIG - 908/987. MURLAGGAN - 923/010. (and STRATHAN - 915/979). CALLICH - 927/036. (and ARCABHI - 925/051). CAONICH - 921/076. KENMORE - 918/100. MUICK - 912/119. SALLACHAN - 912/127. CRIEFF - 910/134,and 905/142. AUCHNASAUL - 893/155. CLUNES - 885/205. COILLEROS - 855/183. INVERMALLIE - 887/136.
Oh aye,the grid references are for the location of the dwellings themselves,as the farms generally spread themselves over 2 or 3 thousand acres.Let me know if these are working out okay, and I shall give you refences for the other farms on the Lochiel Estate.
Cheers,Chris.

Chris,
Worked like a charm. There were two or three that were off by one grid, but I was able to locate those by taking a closer look at the modern Ordnance Survey maps (some had old dwellings marked still, others had Gaelic alternative place names shown). Of those you sent, about 1/3 of the farms were ones I had questions on, so thanks for doing this! If you have more from the old Lochiel Estate, I'd love to look for them as well.
