My great grandfather John Cameron was a shepherd at Ratalichmore until he emigrated to Australia in 1848 aged 22. He was the illegitimate son of Ann Cameron of Fort William and Duncan Cameron a shepherd of Ratalichmore and was born 25/5/1825. His mother was the daughter of Ewen Cameron of Erracht and Ann McDonald , Ewen was a Captain in the 79th Highlanders.
My searches of Scotlandspeople BDM and the 1841 Census have failed to provide any more information other than John may have had a sister KATHRINE born 1829. How can I expand my searches for more info on this family.
Thanks

Hi Petkal, Welcome to the board! For a long time my family has believed that we are descended from Cameron's of Ratlichmore. Some information has come to light in the past several years that casts doubt on that assumption. My great great grandfather, Angus Cameron (son of Big Hugh and Nancy Cameron) was born in 1829, and emigrated to Nova Scotia around 1851. Are you familiar with the Clan Cameron DNA project? There is lots of information on the Clan Cameron web page - just follow the links. I am participant 28966. I would be fascinated to know if we were a match. I know you said that you have looked at the 1841 census, but Bryan Keddy's excellent website here may provide you with some additional leads: freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ked1/41ftwillcen8.htmlAlso Clan Cameron Australia has an excellent genealogy website at: www.clan-cameron.org.au/index.phpYou may find something there, if you haven't already looked. The place name, Ratalichmore, may be spelled: Ratullochmore, Rathliesmore, Ratlichmore, or just Ratuloch - or even more variations of that. You probably also know it was located near Loch Lochy, and the Cameron's who lived there were most likely descendants of the original MacMartin inhabitants of the area. Thanks for joining the family message board and I look forward to chatting further on the subject. Slainte, John

Hi John, Thanks for your response , have had a look at Bryn Keddy's site , still some work to do though. Bob Cameron at www.clan-cameron.org.au/index.php has been fantastic , all of John's descendants in are listed there. There were a number of Camerons who emigrated on the Blonde in 1848 and I would like to confirm the relationships of 5 of these John, Flora, Ewen , Agnes and Anne Morrow who came later but I can't find anything in Scotland to link them . Australian Death certificates for them all give parents as Duncan and Ann Cameron nee Cameron. I will just keep looking. Best regards Petkal

Hi Petkal, You're welcome. I suspect you probably already have found most of the sites or sources I could point you toward. Are you familiar with Somerled MacMillan's book "Bygone Lochaber"? There is a bit of information in it on "Ratullochmore" and the Camerons who lived there.
Please let us know how your search goes, and if you find any new information.
All the best,
John
