The origin of the Cameron of Erracht Tartan

The Cameron of Erracht Tartan (The tartan of the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders(79th) is based on the MacDonald Tartan and Allan Cameron's Mother, who was a MacDonald and ogmented the tartan a bit to form the set of the Cameron Highlanders. Thus the Cameron of Erracht Tartan was born and the regimental tartan of the 79th (Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders).
Also of note is that Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders were the last kilted regiment to wear the kilt into battle and that's why the blue hackle in their bonnets.

Thanks for a great post Alan. Hopefully Val(Cameronian) will add some more stuff about Alan Cameron of Erracht when she has time. There are some articles by her on the GOTC Cameron forum but this is about to be upgraded, and the material will be lost.
He was undoubtedly one of the more impressive of the Cameron Gentry of the late C18th and early C19th.
