Although we have pretty well covered the advantages of having Clan members attend the International Gathering at Achnacarry, there are two other events that may interest those who will be in Scotland during this time as the dates are closely connected.
Firstly, www.clangathering.org/ "The Gathering 2009" is being held in Holyrood Park on 25th and 26th July 2009. It aims to be the 'World's Largest International Gathering' of the clans ever held. This Edinburgh Gathering will take the form of classic highland games and will feature a clan parade up the Royal Mile followed by a unique commemorative clan pageant to be held on the Edinburgh Castle esplanade.
To quote Scotland "The Gathering will take the form of a major Highland Games, but with the addition of a special clan ceremony, designed by the producers of the Edinburgh Tattoo. This will be held on the magnificent castle esplanade and will commemorate the contribution made by the clans to the culture and history of Scotland. The Gathering is being hosted by the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs, and it is hoped that all clan associations will attend"
Then I would like you to consider the Arisaig Games www.road-to-the-isles.org.uk/arisaig-games.html this, the 73rd Arisaig Highland Gathering will be held on Wednesday 29th July 2009 (the day before we attend Achnacarry). And I would thoroughly recommend a trip up 'The Road to the Isles' from Fort William to Mallaig, stopping off at Arisaig the area of Loch na Uamh where Charles Edward Stuart landed in Scotland, and where later Lochiel left for exile in France together with Prince Charles and other Clan Chiefs.
This trip should be a must for all Camerons as you pass through much of past Clan Cameron lands along Loch Eil, past the Fassifern lands, onto Kinlochiel and up past Glenfinnan, the pass where Gentle Lochiel led his Camerons down to meet with the Prince at Glenfinnan and the Memorial stones which mark the point where Bonnie Prince Charles landed in Scotland.
Clan Cameron Scotland's Neil Cameron who is local to this area, usually has a Clan Cameron tent at the Arisaig Games and next year I will certainly be there with some Australian Camerons to help on the day.
