Alright, I'm doing a project on our clan. I live in Canada, and we did Macbeth as a play, so I decided to do my Scottish clans as a little project. I'm Cameron and Graham. I looked back my Graham lineage, and it lead all the way back to Scandinavia. Apparently they were pict. Anyways, does anyone know if the Camerons came from elsewhere or if the lineage goes back to other countries as well?

I looked back my Graham lineage, and it lead all the way back to Scandinavia. Apparently they were pict. Anyways, does anyone know if the Camerons came from elsewhere or if the lineage goes back to other countries as well? Welcome Maiden! I have never heard of the Grahams having Scandinavian roots. The theories I have heard include that they are descended from a Caledonian Chief (which would agree with your Pictish lineage - Picts are not Scandinavian, they were the aboriginal inhabitants of Scotland). The other theory is that they were Anglo-Norman, and came to England with William the Conquerer (along with a number of other families which were to figure prominantly in Scottish history). The Grahams have a proud history, and the family has supplied Scotland with some of its greatest heroes - including the 1st Marquis of Montrose, James Graham, and John Graham of Claverhouse, "Bonnie Dundee". Similarly there are a number of theories about where the Camerons originated. It has been speculated that they too were of Anglo-Norman extraction - but this is just speculation. There was a signatory to the Declaration of Arbroath (1320) named John Cameron (or deCambron) - and there were Camerons on the field at Bannockburn. The Cameron Clan is also made up of other branches, which were not originally Camerons, but came to take the name of their Chief. These included the MacGillonies, the MacSorleys, and the MacMartins. Collectively these familes were known as Clan Mael-anfhaidh. They were present in Lochaber for a long time. The MacSorleys were, as their name suggests, descended from Somerled, and thus share a heritage with Clan Donald. The MacGillonies and MacMartins may have been descended from Scots who originated in Ireland, or they may have been of Pictish stock (or both!). It is difficult to say. What is certain is that they were in Lochaber long enough that it is the traditional home and lands of Clan Cameron. Please stick around and participate - and for more information on our Clan, be sure to visit the Clan webpage, and follow the links for more information on our history etc. Slainte, John

Lets say a person found an answer to a subjet they were looking for. Is there a way they could transfer it to their personal file so they could go back to the information when they need to check it out again? ianjonefan

John, I notice how knowledgable you are on our history. It's neat to see since I have very little knowledge but am working on that This site is very helpful!!! My Brother and Dan are both Donald Camerons and I know my Dad is a 5th from "What we know of" Im wondering how far back that really goes and which Camerons we are more directly tied to. I sent him the link to this site in hopes he gets on But he's not online much so we'll see.

I entered a poem in :RHYME & REASON(MISSING POEM sublink) titled :SON OF THE HOUND: I was wondering if there's a piper out there somewhere that could turn it into a pipe tune? I would love to hear it played on the pipes for the Clan Cameron Gathering. ianjonefan(Jon)

Hello again Jon and of course everyone. It's funny you bring this up. A couple days after you e-mailed me your poem I picked up the old practice chanter and began to come up with a tune to your verse. It's by no means perfect but I'm definitely trying and still working on it. My skill at playing is still at the beginner level. In fact I've been self teaching my lads and myself since the tail end of this past summer. That's when we picked up the chanter and our first lesson book "Beginning the Bagpipe" by Pipe Major Sandy Jones. Since that time I've been able to learn "Amazing Grace", "Scotland the Brave", "When the Battle is Over", and currently working on "The March of the Cameron Men" as well has many others. So hopefully someday I'll be able to broaden my piping horizons and become proficient enough to play in a band with my boys. I to am working on a song specific to Clan Cameron that I started to pen last year and when it's complete I will share with the rest of my Clan. Hopefully some of the more skilled players will pipe in and maybe we can all come up with something fantastic to your wonderful poem. It would be splendid to be able to share at the Gathering. What a great addition to what will already be a memorable experience and to top it off you'd be able to share it with our glorious Chief Lochiel himself what an honor and privilege. Yours Aye, Sean

Sean, Did you try out those other Two websites on learning on how to play the bagpipe that I emailed you about? I've listed them in the Bagpipe -Music Link. ianjonefan(Jon) Hello Jon, Yes I did check them out. I found them both to be informative and useful in their own ways. For those looking to get started I would recommend www.expertvillage.com and then search under highland bagpipes. From there you'll have a few choices but two in particular seemed to stand out in my mind. The two are instructed by seasoned pipers that have played and taught for years. One being Neil Hubbard the other Mike Oberst. Between the two of them they have many videos that bring you from the very basics on up. Definitely worth a trip via cyber space if you have a love and wanting to learn this wonderful instrument. The other site www.hotpipes.com was useful for widespread information on the various forms of bagpipes around the world and also had a great deal of product. As far has a teaching tool I didn't find much that jumped out in a teaching capacity. Again both useful in their own right. I myself got more out of the 1st site mentioned (expertvillage). Uncle Fergus was a site mentioned by Jon in the past and I found that to be a great site as well. I just don't have the web address handy at the moment but if you do a search on any one of the search engines available it will pop up in short order. Hopefully these will help anyone wanting to learn more. Thank you again Jon for sharing those sites with me and the rest of the Clan. Yours Aye, Sean

:WHAT IS A CELT? By today's defenation a cetl can be be a native of Bohemia, ( bet some didn't know that) Brittainy , Galacia, Ireland , Scotland , or Wales. A celt's life revolves around family , and close friends. A celt is more in tune to things around them. A celt can be a friend that will stand by, & with you no matter what the situation. A celt can also be your worst enemey The celt also has a sence of fair play. The true celt will respect those that are different than them. The celt has a strong sence of justice. They might not always win , but they the best they could. to me that's what's being a celt is all about. ianjonefan(Jon)

Starting with the original Clan Cameron Associan Chapter, would it be possible to have a monthly spotlight on each of the Clan Cameron Associan Chapters, by having a copy of their newsletter posted on the messege board? I do not know of anyone else tat might be interested, but I would be interested in hearing news about some of our other "Cameron Cousins" Jon

Jon / Pops, I like the idea of spotlighting a Chapter or Branch from all over. Even though their would be many similarities at the same time many differences as well. It might be tough compiling all the newsletters from all over, but what an interesting treat it would be. It would be fun to find out how the rest of the Clan does their thang ! Sean

Another thing that is along the same lines. If the "live chat" takes off, how about having a representative from the various Chapters and Branches join us periodically. Share some of the things they do, give us their insights and opinions on various matters relating to the Clan and Scottish culture in general and then end it with something fun that has to do with where they hail from. I will read the poem today and take it in. I will then pass it by my fellow pipers and see what we can come up with.

Could anyone tell me if there were women warriors involved in any of the Battles that Clan Cameron fought in besides Culloden ? I'm thinking of Flodden , Killiecrankie , and other Clan Cameron Battles . While I'm at it , maybe I'm not lloking in the right place , but it seems to me most subjects I've seen covered on the Clan Cameron Message board covers men only . How about a link for the women of Clan Cameron ? Where anything , and everything pertaining to the women of Clan Cameron could be posted .
