Hi James,
I'm a Chambers too! My great-great-great grandfather was Edward Joshua Chambers,(b) 1791- ish I believe that he came from Larkshire, his wife was a Ross. The name change commomly occured when men joined the French military. Cameron or (Cam-shrun) sounded more like the french Chambers (Cam-brees). Or so I am to understand. Do you have any history on your family? Perhaps great-grandparents, aunts, uncles?

Hello James and April, My name is Sean H. Chambers. I took this explanation right off the site under Clan Cameron Septs. Here goes. This surname is said to be derived from a Cameron who entered the French military service and assumed the name of Cameraius/Camerario (in French: De La Chambre), or Chalmers, as to be "more agreeable to the language of that country." One of this specific Cameron's progeny, remaining in France, was the ancestor to the Lord of Tartas and others of this surname in that Kingdom. Another of that name, having returned to Scotland, was the ancestor of the Chalmers of Aberdeen-shire and other parts of Scotland. Chalmers was used as a "code name" for various Camerons during the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion, which may also signify the surname's connections with Clan Cameron. All of the above mentioned names may be traced back to the Scots form of the name Chambers. I hope this helped you somewhat in your quest. My father and I have traced our roots to the 15th century. The first Chambers in our family to land in the U.S. from Scotland was Amrose and Jessie with their twin sons Amrose and Alexander. They landed in New York, New York October 12th 1879. Alexander Chambers being my great grandfather. Aonaibh Ri Cheile Sean H. Chambers

I just wanted to add a little more to the origin. Last night I was thumbing thru my Dad's copy of "The Cameron's A History of Clan Cameron" by John Stewart of Ardvorlich. It states basically the same as I posted above but to add to the "code-name" portion I found this rather interesting. "Whatever may be truth of this, it is significant that Doctor Archibald Cameron, brother of 'the Gentle Lochiel', took 'Chalmers' synonymous with 'Chambers' as his "code-name" in the secret Jacobite correspondence after the Rising of 1745" (pg. 231). Just wanted to share that info with other 'Chambers' out there. I thought ya might like a wee bit more on our ties to Clan Cameron. Aonaibh Ri Cheile Sean H. Chambers

Hi John, Assuming that the ancestor you are referring to is the one who lived in Greenock on the Clyde,I would think that they are all sailing/yachting trophies from competitions out on the Firth of Clyde, and up the nearby Gare Loch. It might possibly be a good idea contacting the Royal Northern and Clyde Yacht Club at www.rync.com,and hopefully someone there could provide some answers. Regards,Chris.
