Former GD170/408(National Archives of Scotland).
This collection of papers was assembled by Duncan Campbell of Glenure, who was appointed(?) to be Executor for the Estate of the deceased John Cameron,5th of Kinlochleven, and to be one of the principal tutors for the education and upbringing of his infant son Angus.
Duncan was a close cousin of John, and was the younger brother of Colin "the Red Fox" Campbell of Glenure (assassinated 1753).Duncan and Colin were half-brothers of John Campbell of Barcaldine, and were also grandsons of Sir Ewan Cameron of Lochiel.
There are approx.28 documents within the package, most of which comprise many, many detailed pages. They were never individually catalogued by the National Archives, and are unnumbered.I will list them in rough chronological order:

A Happy New Year to all!
Several months ago I communicated with Chris Doak regarding an unidentified photo of a decorated officer from Eva Cameron's photo album. The earlier hypothesis that he was from the Cadell family having been discouraged by the Cadell family after consulting their family photos of that era, I decided to research the medals from the Crimean War, as suggested by Chris, and discovered that the large 7-pointed star is the Order of Medjide (sp?). Researching recipients of this honor, I came across Major-General William MacBean, (1 Jan 1818-23 Jun 1878, b. in Inverness), supposed descendant of Gillis MacBean, who was awarded both the Victoria Cross and the Order of Medjide. If you google him you will find his photo as an older man with more medals than the younger man in Eva Cameron's photo album, but including the same medals as he had, or so it seems. He was in the 93rd Regiment of Ft. his entire career having enlisted as a private and moving up through the ranks to Major-General. I'm thinking that because Major Angus Cameron married Marjory MacBean, perhaps Marjory was related to this war hero. The papers I found claim that she was also a descendant of Gillis MacBean. There were very close ties between Marjory MacBean.and the MacBeans who married into the MacDonald of Dalness line. I think that Coll MacDonald WS, the maternal uncle that Angus Cameron, son of Marjory and Major Angus worked for, named one of his daughters Marjory Cameron. I wonder if Marjory had a brother who might have been the father of this war hero. What do you think? He is from the right part of the country.
Regards,
Judy

Hello all interested in the progeny of Major Angus Cameron 6th of Kinlochleven,
I made an interesting discovery following the geneological line of Marjory MacBean, Major Angus Cameron's wife with whom he had quite a few children. Her line goes back to Margaret Drummond who had an affair with King James IV of Scotland. They had a child together before Margaret died of food poisoning along with two of her sisters. Marjory MacBean was a direct descendent of that love child. It seems that that particular king was quite generous with his genetic material.

Hello all, I have been trying to figure out what the relationship was between the Campbells of Barcaldine and the Camerons of Kinlochleven, especially since the papers that I found in my folks' basement claim that we are descendants of the Campbells of Barcaldine and the Camerons of Lochiel (by marriage with the Campbells of Barcaldine). When I checked the genealogical charts on the Clan Cameron site, it says that Angus Cameron 4th of Kinlochleven married Margaret Campbell of Barcaldine, daughter of Alexander Campbell of Barcaldine, but all other sources give the name Isobel. The dates seem wrong for Alexander to be the father-in-law of Angus Cameron 4th of Kinlochleven. I noticed in past posts that there is a marriage contract of Angus with Margaret, but elsewhere I found evidence of his marriage with Isobel Campbell of Barcaldine, daughter of John Campbell of Barcaldine and a daughter or sister of Sir Ewen Cameron of Lochiel. According to the Transactions of the Gaelic Society of Inverness, Vol. 21, Angus Cameron of Kinlochleven married Isobel Campbell of Barcaldine. Her mother was sister of Sir Ewen Cameron of Lochiel and her father was John Campbell of Barcaldine (died 1690) who had previously married Margaret, daughter of Campbell of Clathic in 1647 with whom he had heir, Alexander, who married Mary, daughter of Colin Campbell of Lochnell and who was sent to Glencoe after the massacre as a 2nd Lieutenant) John Campbell was son of Patrick Campbell of Barcaldine and Annabel, daughter of Campbell of Dunstaffnage (m. 1620). Patrick Campbell (b. 1592), also known as Para dubh beag, is considered the first Campbell of Barcaldine legitimated under great seal of Scotlland with brother James 27 Dec 1614. Obtained through his father Innerzeldies and the other lands in Perthshire and Barcaldine Castle in Argyllshire. Patrick Campbell was son of Sir Duncan Campbell, 1st Bart. of Glenorchy. I am probably missing something obvious and perhaps way off in my calculations of lifespans. If anyone can clear up my confusion, I would appreciate it. In addition, in the Clan Campbell Abstracts I came across a document that mentions John Cameron 3rd of Kinlochleven's marriage to Isobel Campbell, and their son, Daniel. This was alluded to in an earlier post, but without the name "Daniel." I am reproducing the citation here in case it is of interest to anybody: "1716, July 2nd.-Bond by Daniel Cameron, son of the deceased John Cameron of Kenlochliven, to Isobel Campbell, widow of the said John Cameron, and mother of the said Daniel Cameron, for 500 merks, dated at Kenlochliven 12th February 1712." www.archive.org/details/clancampbellabst01camp , Clan Campbell Abstracts Any ideas? Hello again!
I sent a query to the Campbellton/Seymour Heritage Society and they responded with some specific information about Angus Cameron 6th Kinlochleven, his daughter, Anne Cameron, and her husband, Benjamin Butler Ranney (now I know his full name). The following is their very enlightening response:
"We did a quick look here to see about this family. Angus Cameron got two military grants in Seymour Twp. Con. 6, L. 13 - 92 acres and Con. 11, L. 5 - 77 acres in 1833. He is recorded as a Captain in the British Army. We do not have any way here to check what became of these properties. It would require research at the Land Registry Office in Cobourg. His son-in-law was Benjamin Butler Ranney who purchased Con. 6. L. 4 in 1833. They must have left for Picton before he died as he is buried in Glenwood Cemetery in Picton. This is a conflict with the info that Angus died in Seymour. Edmund Boyle died Apr. 15, 1879 at age 84 yr. in California. His name is on the marker for Anne at St. Mary Magdalene Cemetery in Picton but it is not positive that he actually is buried there. Anne's marker says 1803 - Mar. 9, 1873 at age 70." sent by Ann Rowe, Chair of Research, csheritage@persona.ca

Hello Judy
Looking at your last couple of posts - despite the conflicting statements of Campbell and Cameron sources, I think I have the right generations and marriages in our Cameron Genealogies, though always happy to be corrected. One problem is that numbering of generations in these families gets confused for various reasons.
I note your citation re Daniel Cameron - with Daniel a common variation of Donald, he'll be the eldest son of John C. and Isobel Campbell. And I've added Benjamin Ranney in his proper place (I hope).

Some time ago Chris wrote the following: "Anyway,I was through at the National Archives of Scotland yesterday, with the sole intention of having a look at a large bundle of papers dealing with the Kinlochleven family, contained within the holdings of the Campbells of Barcaldine.Primarily they dealt with the death of John Cameron of Kinlochleven in 1762,settling his debts, and the process of educating his only son Angus till he reached adulthood. The papers clarified a lot of the family history prior to young Angus,so here is the most accurate assessment I can muster for the Kinlochleven family, and which supercedes my previous entry:
[1].MARTIN McMARTIN,2nd.of Letterfinlay.
[2].His 2nd son JOHN,Possessor of Kinlochleven,early/mid 1600s.
[3].His sons ANGUS CAMERON and DUNCAN CAMERON,Wadsetters of Kinlochleven in 1667,Angus till his death in 1689.
[4.]JOHN CAMERON(son of Angus),Possessor of Kinlochleven,Wadsetter of Kinlochbeg.Died 1720.Married to Isabell Campbell of Barcaldine(subsequently married to John Cameron of Erracht,and died 1761).Children:1.Donald.2.Angus.3.Duncan.4.John.
[5.1].DONALD CAMERON of KINLOCHLEVEN,died Appin 1720.Married to Margaret Cameron.Children:A.John.
~A.JOHN CAMERON of KINLOCHLEVEN Yr.Tutored by his Uncle Duncan after his father's death.Last record of John is in 1744."
My Camerons are descendant from Duncan, brother of Angus (Wadsetters of Kinlochleven). But I am having a problem working out the generations, because it states that .JOHN CAMERON of KINLOCHLEVEN Yr.Tutored by his Uncle Duncan but it would have to be gt uncle and that is probably unlikely. Can anyone throw so light on this or let me know if I am just reading it incorrectly.
Many thanks Penny

Hi Peter,
You posted a request in March 2006. As I have just joined this site (2011) I am responding to your request about the Camerons who lived at Taychreggan.at Appin. Maria Menzies McCallum (new Cameron) was my greatgrandmother and I am interested in whatever you may have found about this branch of the family. Although it is now 5 years since you posted and you may no longer be involved I would appreciate a response. Also if there are others who have an interest in this particular branch of the Cameron's I would like to hear from you.
Many thanks
Kath Thomas
