Hi, I was wondering if any of you researchers out there have come across instances where the Camerons of Lochiel's Children have taken on the surname of Lochiel.
I have come across a couple of entries on "Rootsweb" where the submitters say that Sir Ewan Cameron of Lochiel b1629 who married Isobel MacLean of Duart and Donald of Lochiel b 1796 who married Vere Catherine Hobart had children who went by the last name of Lochiel. (looked on the IGI for these couples, can't remember the exact details of hand now, but did find Catherine Vere Hobart but nothing about any children).
Anyway I am asking this as I have come back to the name in my research. This is my GGGGgrandfather:
Philip Lochiel d c1835 marr c 1804 +Mary McKinlay b 1784 ire d 1874 Lanarkshire, Scot. ...... Neil Lochiel b 1805 ire d 1864 Lanark. Scot. ...... Agnes b 1811 ? d 1886 Scot. ...... Ellen b 1817 ? d 1892 Scot. ...... John bc 1819 Scot. ...... Mary bc 1821 Scot. ...... James bc 1826 Scot. ...... Christina bc 1826 Rutherglen, Scot. ...... Elizabeth (my GGGgrandmother) b 1831 Rutherglen, Scot. d 1890 Scot.
I AM working with the information I have got and using SP and the IGI to try going back from where I am, but I came across this very informative site when Googling for "LOCHIEL" and thought some of your very knowledgable members might know something interesting about the last name.
Regards Karen

Hi My name is also Karen, I have not been looking too long for relatives with the name Lochiel but I took the name for granted for a long time as my maternal grandmother Agnes Spiers Lochiel (born May 15 1920)( married name Thompson) and her sister Margaret Brown Lochiel(born September 17 1912) who both died 7 years ago(1997). Might I add they were both born, raised and died in Rutherglen, there was at least 2 brothers one died as a child the other died when he was in his early twentys. I was born in Bellshill but brought up in the Rutherglen area although sadly I do not live there any more.
As far as I know my great aunt and grand mother were the last people to actually to be born with Lochiel as their properly given surname.
I have been told that if I can take proof that I am a descendant of Lochiel that I can have the Toll Bells (at Toll Cross in Glasgow) rung for me when I go to Glasgow. Incase you have not heard about this its because the Cameron of Lochiel saved Glasgow from being burned to the ground by ringing these bells and waking people and alerting them to what was about to happen.
The Lochiel name still is in my family is it in yours?
Please get in touch

Hi Karen,
Welcome to the message center.
You are undertaking a very interesting search, and I wish you success in your genealogy.
In regard to the bell ringing in Glasgow, I do have some additional information. This custom is reserved only for Lochiel, the Chief of Clan Cameron. As far as I have ever heard, no one other than the Chief himself may have this honor paid to him, not even his children, unless they eventually become chief. It is an honor paid in response to Donald Cameron, XIX Chief of Clan Cameron, and his efforts to save the city from being destroyed during the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745/46.
Once again, best of luck in your genealogical search. Please return to let us know what you learn!

Thank you very much for such a quick reply to my post. This is my first time on this web site. I am in Leeds England although I was born in Bellshill and brought up in Rutherglen. In Leeds where I am at the moment it is 2 am.
Do you know of anyone who actualy has the surname Lochiel? As I said in my post the last people I know born with the surname were my Great Aunt and my Grandmother (maternal) who both died 7 years ago.

Welcome Karen, A very brief search on www.familysearch.org/reveals a number of Lochiels in both Austraila and the United States (most seem to have been in Pennsylvania)as well as in Scotland. It may be worthwhile expanding your search. You have started in the right place, as there are people here who can help point you in the right direction. Good luck!

A welcome to the Board to KarenMcC.,and to KarenV.(another Bellshill Bairn - that makes two of us!), I suspect that the two of you are distantly related, and share the same ancestors - Phillip Lochiel and Mary McKinlay.
I assume that Phillip's name came off the Death Certificate/Marriage Certificate of one of his kids(what was his occupation?),but it doesn't seem a very Scottish name for the time.Given that wife Mary was born in Ireland, and their eldest son Neil too,it could be that Phillip was of Irish origin too. However,he could have been Scottish - possibly a Soldier posted to Ireland during the up-rising of the late 1790s/early 1800s.
Looking at the 1841 and 51 Censuses for Glasgow, where Mary and her children re-located from Rutherglen,we can see that there were two other principal Lochiel families in the City:
-Mary Lochiel(widow of James,a Grocer),and children Neil,b.1815,John,b.1819,and Janet,b.1820(all born in Glasgow). -Neil Lochiel,b.1802 Glasgow, wife Mary, and children William,b.1829,Margaret,b.1835,Ellen,b.1837,Mary,b.1840,and Neil,b.1843(all born Rutherglen except for the younger Neil).
There are a lot of similiar first names to Phillip's children, which suggests they may be related in some way.
In the 1851 Census for Glasgow there is also listed a Policeman,Charles Lochiel, born 1819 in Aberdeenshire.,who I think comes from the area that the surname originates from.
I suspect that there may not be a Cameron connection to the Lochiel surname, but that it is a corruption of the name "Lochell",which can be found in the Parish Records (see the International Genealogical Index )in Aberdeenshire in the late 1700s.The name probobly originates from the Parish of Lochell/Leochel(various spellings) in that County.
I could be wrong, but it might be worth following up!
Regards,Chris.

Hello all, and thank you all for your replies,
Sorry it has taken me so long to get back, but I thought I had ticked the box to be notified of replies, but must not have. So I got a nice little suprise while " googling" today.
Karen, I'll get in touch with you later on and see if we can work out a connection.
Chris,
Yes, the only place I have found Philip mentioned is his wifes DC and childrens DC's, where his occupation was given as coal miner.
I have been using the Scotlandspeople site, and some very helpful people had transcribed the census info for me, plus some others that you haven't mentioned. I have also used that site to look at all Lochiel (and variant spellings) BDM's and am slowling (as time and money allows) downloading the ones that appear to relate to my family. Have been hoping mayby by looking into one of Philip's and Mary's other children I may get some leeds to go back further. No such luck so far.
Also, while "googling", I have found a few people refer to a place in Ireland called Lochiel. As I have no ideas on Irish (or Scottish) pronunciation, I was wondering if mayby they were refering to Loughguille as this is the only place name I can find in Ireland that looks like it could be pronounced Lochiel. Also, haven't found any Lochiels or variants in Ireland.
Anyway, thanks again to every one who replied.

Hello Rob,
Yes! This is one of my lot.
Neil I have mentioned above (son of Philip) Married Susannah McCairns (have also found it as McCavin, McCarn and my GGgrandfather, who signed Neils death cert. recorded it as being Kerr). They had three surviving children , Neil, Helen and William. I had not, as yet found this marriage, so thank you very much for this. Do you know if Neil and Rose Ann had children?
I have a bit more info on the family, if you are interested just let me know.
Thank you again, Rob

Hi Karen,
Glad the info was of some use. As yet I don't know if they had any children, I have only just found this marriage myself, so haven't got much on them yet. If I find anything else on them I will let you know.

Hello again Karen,
I found this in the index of the national archives of scotland website. In 1824 Precognition for the crime of riot and assault against Neil O'Hail alias Lochiel, collier, of Westthorn Row, Glasgow. He was accused with three other men, who were all from Rutherglen. Good chance this is your Neil, son of Phillip or at least some relation to him. It gives you something else to work on, although I'm not sure how common the name O'Hail is.
Rob.

Hi Rob,
I don't think this is my Neil. Had a look on IGI and found Neal O'Heal m Mary Pender 1834 Rutherglen. On the Scotlandspeople site one of the Lochiel deaths has mothers surname listed as Pender, so I would say it's a different lot.
Thanks anyway, the name O'Hail is not very common at all. (lots of Hails, Hales though). It might be worth looking into them on SP.
If your looking for any more info on the Neil that married Rose ann, I know he moved to Muiravonside, Stirling.

HI, I have just started to research my ncestory. My father, grandfather and great- grandfather were all named Neil Lochiel.. Verbal family history is that my great-grandfather left Skye, moved to the Glasgow area and became a miner My grandfather moved from Glasgow to Polmont, Stirlingshire as he gained employment in the Redding Mines.
Family history also states that my great grandfather 's wife was named Margaret.. Isobel Lochiel

You will find the early generations of your family in the Australian Cameron Genealogies on www.clan-cameron.org.au, as given to me by your cousin Luis Enrique. I've only recorded the first generation in Mexico, after Cameron left Australia for California and then Mexico. You have probably hundreds of cousins in Australia by now. Bob Cameron
