Alexander Douglas Cameron was the son of my Great Great Grandfather's brother John Black Cameron. John was born in Tomintoul, Kirkmichael and raised in Grantown on Spey.
Alexander was born in Shanghai, China in April 1891 to John's second wife Lillian Blanche Harris.
John Cameron had served in the Hong King then Shanghai police for 30 years when he retired with wife and son to Strathcona, Alberta, Canada in 1901.
Alexander joined Lord Strathcona's Horse Regiment in 1911 and there began an illustrious carreer serving The Empire.
A renowned Horseman he joined the Canadian Expedititonary Overseas Forces in 1914 in Portsmouth within days of arriving in France was wounded in the head. This never worried him as he returned to France as soon as possible after recovering in England.
He received teh Military Cross and Distinguished Service Order while being mentioned in dispatches by General Haig for his bravery and valour in the field.
He became Lt Col. of the 38th battalion Canadian Infantry.
During WW2 he served in teh RAF and was awarded the OBE for service to his country in 6 Jan 1943.
He retired from the army in November 1946 retaining his rank of Colonel and at the time stated he was to operate his farm in Chardstock, Devon.

Wondered if any Cameron's out in Canada would have any tips on finding out more information about John Black Cameron (Alexander's father) who appears to have passed away in Canada and I believe may be buried at the Mt Pleasance cemetery in Alberta.
Regards
Mark

Our Canadian chatterbox, Sherbrooke Jacobite, must not be monitoring the boards or he would have jumped in here and answered you right away! In the meantime, welcome to the boards. We have a new server which does not send us a notification when there has been a hit to one of our threads... so bear with us if you don't get an answer back right away. We have to remember to come visit on a regular basis, instead of the boards notifying us, reminding us.

Hi Mark, Sorry I am so slow in responding, I was away on vacation, and didn't check in. Thank you to Gaelgal for bringing this to my attention. I live in Alberta, and I will see what I can dig up for you.
I'll let you know what I find.
Slainte,
John

Hi all. I'm still trying to track down what happened to John black Cameron. Found out there is a plot in Mt. pleasant cemetery for a john black in 1905. Would be interested to find out if this is him and where he lived in Alberta.
