Cameron of Florida had a great start to 2009 and we wanted to share it with everyone. At the three large Florida Games we had good attendance and response to our attendance. Winter Springs brought in a few Cameron's who had previously stopped participating in clan events nationwide. Each family came to the games to reconnect. The Winter Springs Games had an average showing of just under 20,000 and some vendors chose not to show up due to the economy. We want to thank Craig Martin for providing the extra tent and many of the background and heritage items for the tent.
In February we welcomed the newest (and youngest) member when Rob and Tuesday Martin gave birth to their son Ewan Cameron Martin. Yay!
The Northeast Florida Games had the largest showing for clan members. Despite the growing economic concerns the games reached a new high in attendance by maxing out the 26,000 person capacity of the fairgrounds and over 2,000 cars turned away by police. All the members in Northeast Florida met in Jacksonville, two months before the game and planned out this years tent. We planned the tent around getting people inside to talk and learn about Cameron. Members brought weapons, shields (targes), food, maps, pictures and information about Cameron and the related Septs. We centered our efforts on just having fun and talking to people passing by. One member brought old Scottish pennies and passed them out to the children as well as stamped their hands with the crest.
Lord and Lady Stewart were in attendance at the games because they were the honored clan. As the honored clan the Stewart's chose Clan Cameron as the 2009 Northeast Florida Scottish Games Best Clan Tent!!! This is the first time that Clan Cameron of Florida has received this honor at any game. When we spoke to the Stewart's we were told that we didn't have the rugs laid out nor the large banners with the crests like some tents but rather we had members who spent their time inside and outside the clan tent talking to people, posing for pictures and being a good example of Scottish heritage. We are deeply honored to be chosen by the Stewarts for this award.
In May the clan sponsored a Scottish cooking class at a cooking school in Jacksonville, Florida. The class filled up with Cameron's and other clan members. Two Cameron members flew over form New Zealand and joined us during their vacation for the class. The cooking class got great reviews and response. We have decided that we are going to continue doing annual cooking classes.
We say good-bye to Jean (Taylor) Samuelson who passed away three weeks after attending the NEFL games. She was excited to be back with the clan at the games and was part of our receiving the Best Clan Tent award. We pray for the family and will miss her.
We continue to work on our newsletter, web site and meetings to work on continuing and promoting the Clan heritage and look forward to 2010.
