Greetings! Several of us are trying to find the link to Scotland for a James Cameron that settled in New Brunswick (land grant on the Nashwaak River when discharged after the Revolutionary War in 1783). I have not seen the direct linking information yet, but I am told from someone that has investigated this considerably more then I have (traveled to NB and to Scotland) that James was a member of the 42nd Regiment of Foot that sailed to North America on May 1, 1776 from Greenock Scotland. However, it appears that there were several James Camerons that enlisted in 1776. Any ideas on where to go next and/or how to identify where those James Camerons came from, so we can follow each path backward?

The 42nd Regiment of Foot is The Black Watch Regiment, traditionally manned from the lowlands of Scotland. Look for Black Watch regimental histories from the American Revolution days, and see if enlistments are recorded somewhere. It may show the municipality from which each James Cameron enlisted. I'd imagine you could google "Black Watch Regiment in the American Revolution" and get enough ancillary ideas to press on and weed through...maybe a transport ship name and port of embarkation from Great Britain. I just breezed through the indexc of my copy of "Saratoga" by Richard Ketchum, but did not see the 42nd Foot listed , so they weren't at Saratoga in 1777. There are many, many James Camerons which came to America in the 18th and 19th Centuries. I have a James Cameron who was my GG Grandfather, who was born in N. Ireland abt 1851 and who came to Napponee, Ontario shortly after the 1871 Canadian census, I presume, because he doesn't appear on the 1871 census...didn't stay too long cause he wound up in Herkimer County, NY in 1893. Anyway, this is a tough bit of slogging to sort through. If I stumble into anything which might be of use as I ruck and maul my way around the internet, I'll be sure to pass it along. Good hunting. I just googled "Black Watch Regiment in the American Revolution" and there are many good leads for you there. The regiment sailed for New York on 1 May 1776. There is a Black Watch society in both the US (Indiana) and Canada. You should be able to find the transport ship name upon which each James Cameron was manifested, then keep driving backwards to find the enlistment records and township of origin. Cheers, Mike deMayo P.S. I do recall as a youngster, seeing the plaque commemorating George Washington's defense of Harlem heights against the Black Watch down on Manhattan Island near the neighborhood my father grew up in.
