Greetings!
I am trying to solve a puzzle about the relationship between several Cameron families who left the Glen Moriston area in 1773, traveled to Sir John Johnson's land in the Mohawk River Valley of New York, US, then joined the loyalists and eventually ended up in Glengarry and Stormont counties of southern Ontario, Canada.
I've pieced together that a group of the Camerons were McSorleys who had moved from Glen Nevis to Glen Moriston. They were:
Alexander McSorley Cameron Sr. b 1729 (son of ?, son of Donald b abt 1637, son of Donald Dubh of Glen Nevis, second son of Alexander McSorley Cameron the 8th of Glen Nevis b abt 1580)
m Margaret McDonnell Their sons: Alexander Jr, and Duncan.
The other McSorley Cameron who made the same migration at the same time was:
John McSorley Cameron, b 1733 Glen Moriston m Nancy Ann Grant they had: Isabella, b 1759 Inverness, m. Peter Grant Ellen/ Helen, m. John McMartin in NY 1778 "Big" John McMartin
I can't find anything that would tie this John McSorley Cameron to the Alexander McSorley Camerons.
Any details on the McSorleys in Glen Moriston that might help me find additional sons and daughters of the well-known lineage would be great!
Thanks
Kim

I won't be much help to you, but as a Cameron, and native of the Mohawk Valley, I am quite aware of the large number of Cameron's which had lived down the Valley in the area around Johnstown. I was also aware that they were loyalists, and that the local committees of Safety rather disinvited them their presence in the Valley during the Revolution. Some number of them must have enlisted in the British Army and returned as many favors of the Americans in the Mohawk Valley as they could--generally members of the Green Jackets regiment along with their Mohawk Indian allies...Battle of Oriskany, 1777 along with regular raids up and down the Mohawk Valley...9 June 1779 had a particularly poignant effect on my wife's Eysaman ancestors...come to mind. You should be able to locate some useful information from the Fulton County or Montgomery County Historical Society...I forget which County Johnstown is in, now. There just weren't that many people up there, so running down their names and relationships is not too difficult at the local level. I have learned much about my German ancestors and my wife's German ancestors from the local Herkimer County Historical Society. Cheers and good hunting, Mike deMayo LTC ofr US Infantry (retired), Mohawk, NY.

Hello Kim: I believe I am from the line of John McSorley CAMERON and Nancy GRANT. However I have not encountered the name McSorley associated with it. (It certainly helps sort out the Johns) ! I am searching for the parentage of Charles Cameron b 1783, Inverness-shire Scotland of the Lochiels. He had land in Peel County Ontario,

Cont'd to Kim: Some of his female children had ""GRANT" as an added given name. Others had Burden (Burdon), which begs me to think there is a connection. I cannot find the parentage of Charles and have more to tell. Please be in touch with Delphine Large (Cameron) dlarge @shaw.ca
