looking for information on alexander cameron , arrived in nova scotia from cromarty scotland 1835 , was a blacksmith in sunnybrae picto co. died oct25 1886 scotch hill picto co. would like to know where he came from in scotland and if he had any family there . Welcome Carl! I am originally from Sherbrooke, and know the Sunnybrae area well. I have Cameron relatives in Caledonia, and undoubtedly some in the East River area as well. As far as I know I am not related to your Alexander Cameron. A brief search yielded the following: He is buried in the Churchville Cemetery, where the inscription says that he died on October 25, 1886 aged 77 years. Margaret, his wife died on October 10, 1877 aged 61 years. In the census of 1881 he is listed as living in New Glasgow, with John W. Cameron (b. 1842) - Probably his son. Alexander Cameron & Margaret MacDonald were married on October 5, 1838 by Rev. John McRae. Alexander was such a common name among our Clan that it is going to be difficult to trace him in Scotland without some more details. A quick look at familysearch.org turned up 191 listings for Alexander Camerons born between 1807 and 1811 in Scotland. I do have some Cameron genealogies from Pictou County (somewhere!) - I will see if I can find them, and if there is an Alexander in there. Good Luck with your search! Slainte John

Thank you John for your quick response , I thought it was going to be difficult because of the common name ,I already have the history of his children , John William was a stone mason and was the one who built the tunnells underground from citidel hill to the waterfront in Halifax . Alexander is burried in Churchville Cemetary ,I have been there to see the stone hopping to find a little more info but to no avail .I thioght maby if I could find a ships passenger list somewhere there might be some info there. I know he arrived from Cromarty in 1835 and I think he came over on the Mayflower.I think this is going to be a tough one . Anyway again many thanks for your time . Carl P. S. When my father was alive he always told me that when he died I would become the chief of this branch of the clan. I always thought he was joking , but on tracing my history back to alexander I am the oldest son of the oldest son all the way back , I must admitt that I am not much up on how the clans or chief's work but now I wish my father hadn't died so young .There are so many questions Thank you again Carl

You're welcome Carl. I haven't found any information for you - but will keep looking. I am not familiar with the ship Mayflower in 1835 - but there may be information in Pictou on ships that arrived from Cromarty in 1835. There is a memorial to an Alexander Cameron at Loch Broom, Pictou Co., although he is too old to be your Alexander - if you are passing through Pictou, the memorial and Loch Broom church are well worth a visit (as is the Hector Heritage Quay). www.parl.ns.ca/logchurch/cameronmemorial.htmwww.townofpictou.com/hhq/index.html

Thank you again John for your reply ,upon checking the 1881 Canadian nova Scotia census I found Alexander Cameron and it gives his birth year of 1808 . This i believe is the right one according to his marital status ( he was widowed at that time ) and John William ( his first born son ) as the head of the household and whom he lived with until his death also his trade being a blacksmith in New Glasgow . This means he was born after Oct 25 1808 because of his age . In the family search .org there are only 4 possibilities that I can see and only one from Cromarty . The family bible states that he arrived from Cromarty ,I don't know if this means he sailed from there or lived there , also I am guessing at the name of the ship , it was my mother that told me that information and she was not sure .
