My name is Sasha and my great grandfathers name is Francias Cambren, I believe the name Cambren came from the name Cameron. Though I can not be sure, I was wondering if anyone could help lead me in the right direction to find out if I am in fact a Cameron. I've looked at countless websites and books and would love the advice anyone could give. Though I am very young still, at the mere age of 16 I can not wait to see come and visit Scotland. Until I am old enough to make the journey by myself, I want to find out as much as I can about my family history. The one thing I know for sure is that I do have Scottish blood running through me. Anyways thank you for any help you can be. Sincerely, Sasha

Hi Sasha, Welcome to the Cameron message board. I don't know much about the name Cambren (other than having read somewhere about some that were killed by Indians in Texas) - but it is very similar to the way some people spelled Cameron in very old documents. There are lots of people who visit this board who may be able to help you. Where did your great grandfather live? Do you know when he was born and where? With some more information, we might be able point you in the right direction.
I think it is great that you are so interested in your family history. Scotland is a wonderful country to visit, and it makes it all the more special if you have some information about where your family came from.
Slainte,
John

Sasha,
I did some digging into the spelling and found Cambrin (circa 1365). It could have been spelled that why prior to coming into this country. Back then imigration spelled the names the way they thought they sounded, or gave you a name that they thought that fit you because your name was too hard for them.
As John stated it would really help if you knew where your Great Grand Da came from or lived.
I hope this helped you out. We welcome all into the Camerons, sometime even the Campbells, but only rarely.
Cheers,
Scott Cameron

Hello, I am sorry it took me so long to reply to your comments and questions, between school and work it is quite hard to get much of anything else done. My papa does not know who his real father is, he has never meet him. There is a big family secret that my great grandfather has kept from him about his real father. My great grandfather is still alive, he has quite a sprak for life, he is 89. I have asked him before about where he was born and raised, and all he seems to remember back to is until he was about my age and he knew he had just came to Flordia. He had four daughters, and one of his daughters is my papa's mother. My papa is not on speaking terms with his mother and so there is no possible way to get any imformation from her. But one of his daughters, my great aunt Evelyn lives close to my great grandpapa and she has given me all the information she knows. She has told us that she knows our family came from Scotland, but she isn't sure where. She believes that when her father, or her grandfather came over from Scotland that the name was simply spelt wrong. She is a dear lady and she has tried to figure this puzzle out. It is quite confusing, and I am sorry if I confused anyone with my explantation. I do aperticate you taking the time to talk to me, and thank you for helping me in any way you can. It may take me quite a few years but I am determinded to figure this puzzle out. Being young does set limits at the moments on where I can travel and such but in little under three years I will travel to Scotland to study abroad there and hopefully that will help a lot. Regardless if I am a Cameron or not, though I do hope I am, the Camerons are very wonderful people and I do thank you for being so kind. Thank you very much, Sasha

Hi Sasha,
Don't worry about taking a long time between posts - we all do sometimes. I know what it is like to be busy. I will keep my eyes open, and if I come across anything that looks like your family name, I will look into it. In the meantime - keep searching. Your great aunt Evelyn will probably be the best place to start - find out everything you can and go from there. There are immigration records that may show you when your ancestor came to America. You could also check census records to see where they lived and how when they were born. Did your family belong to a particular church? They often keep records as well.
It may take you a while, if you don't have much information to start with - but it is great fun! And the answers will come, perhaps when you least expect it.
For now - stick around, this is the family message board, and you may find some clues. You are always welcome here.
Slainte,
John
