Looking for information on Jessie Cameron, married Donald McLean, son Alexander was born 1796 in Loch Habel(?). Alexander married his second wife Flora Gillies in 1848 in Port William and then migrated to Australia.
Any leads on the Cameron heritage much appreciated.

Welcome to the family message board!
I can't shed any light on Jessie Cameron - but Loch Habel is likely Lochaber (often pronounced "Loch harbour"). And the marriage was probably in "Fort" William.
Good luck with your search!
John

Hi donnamclean Where in Australia did they come to? Might help to find out more here before you try to find them in Scotland. However, in the Family Search (IGI) there is an interesting marriage. Alexander McLean married Flora Gillies at Kilmonivaig, Inverness on 11 July 1852. The church at Kilmonivaig is near Spean Bridge, 9 3/4 miles NE of Fort William. The record is found in the Church of Scotland Parish Register FHL film # 990709 which has baptisms from 1730 and marriages from 1795, both until 1854. Looking at that film might yield more information than the index gives.Anyway, good luck Ele

Ele,
Thank you for the marriage details. Alexander and Flora McLean emigrated to Australia in 1856 and settled in Riddells Creek in Victoria. Alexander died in 1892 and Flora in 1906. We can trace them from there but have had very little luck going back on the Cameron side in Scotland, hence the query.

Donna, It's probobly not going to help you too much tracing the Cameron side back, but here is the full entry for the Marriage of Alexander and Flora from the Kilmonivaig Parish Records:
"Alexander MacLean, residing at Brackletter, this Parish, and Flora Gillies, residing at Achteraw,Parish of Boleskin and Abertarph, were proclaimed in order to marriage at Kilmonivaig Parish Kirk, three times on Sunday the 11th day of July 1852,and married the (blank) of same month by (blank) at (blank)".
Brackletter was a small settlement of approx.10/12 crofts, which lay a few miles to the north-east of Fort William.
Do you happen to know the name of Alexander's first wife?It might help to track him down at an earlier period.
Cheers, Chris.

Chris,
Thanks for sending that information through. Unfortunately we've got no information on Alexander's first wife. All we know is that he was widowed, and there was a son John from that marriage who was aged 65 when Alexander died in 1892 and there was a daughter Jessie who had predeceased Alexander. As this information was sourced from Alexander's death certificate in Australia we are not certain of the accuracy. So far we've had no luck conclusively identifying John although we believe that he did not emigrate to Australia so he may have remained around Fort William.
Regards
Donna McLean
