Hi James,
Welcome to the message board!
From the Clan Cameron website:
CHALMERS, CHAMBERS, CHAMBRES, CAMERARIUS, CAMERARIO, DE CAMERA, DE LA CHAMBRE
This surname is said to be derived from a Cameron who entered the French military service and assumed the name of Camerarius/Camerario (in French: De La Chambre), or Chalmers, as to be "more agreeable to the language of that country."
One of this specific Cameron's progeny, remaining in France, was the ancestor to the Lord of Tartas and others of this surname in that Kingdom.
Another of that name, having returned to Scotland, was the ancestor of the Chalmers of Aberdeen-shire and other parts of Scotland. Chalmers was used as a "code name" for various Camerons during the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion, which may also signify the surname's connections with Clan Cameron.
All of the above mentioned names may be traced back to the Scots form of the name Chambers.
All the best with your search,
John

Hello everyone, I was getting all excited another Chambers and then I saw the post was frae 2003 and this James has yet to make an appearance agin. I also thought it may have been my younger brother (James), but his middle name is Stuart not Ronald. Oh well ! I do have more personal info on my line in Scotland and it's connections. The Chambers sept / family of Clan Cameron should always be proud not only for the Chambers but it's proud connections to this glorious Clan. Talk to ye latrrr. Yours Aye, Sean

I am advised by a reasonably well informed person on another forum that he was actually born John Paul in Fife. Paul is often an anglicization of the gaelic MacPhail or Mcfaull but of course anyone with a father called Paul could also have this surname not just Camerons. He was apparently adopted by a family surnamed Jones. how far they were removed from any Welsh origins is unclear.
