While going through airport security in Edinburgh for my flight home there was a passenger 2 people ahead of me who was stopped by security personal . He had a Fifth of Scotch in his carry-on luggage . You can imagine what happened to the scotch . I wonder what kind it was ?

Jon, I had a 1/2 bottle of Lagavulin left when I got to the Edinburgh Airport hotel where we stayed the last night before our return trip to the USA on August 7. It pained me greatly, but I left the 1/2 bottle with the barkeep at the hotel pub, but not before pouring myself a one, last fine gentleman's portion. There was a bit of mischevous delight, though. I had filled my sporran flask before packing it into my checked luggage. And it made it all the way back to O'Hare in Chicago - undetected and unmolested! So much for little delights. The Gathering in Edinburgh and the Cameron Gathering in Fort William/Achnacarry were wonderful. I have about 22 hours of video, sights and sounds, of our whole trip. And we had a marvelous time traveling the 2 weeks that we were there in Scotland. Can't wait for the next Clan Cameron Gathering, 9 years hence, though I will be pushing 75! All the best. Slainte! Terry

Terry & Jon, I got bumped by Air Canada in London (Argghhhh!) on my way home from the gathering and wound up spending the night. Of course when I arrived in Calgary the next day, my luggage did not. I wasn't so worried about my ordinary clothes - but my Kilt, Jacket, Sporran etc, would be difficult (and expensive!) to replace. And to really add to my stress there were two bottles of the Dew of Ben Nevis in my suitcase, which can't be found outside of Scotland (the whisky - not my suitcase). Thankfully it all showed up several days later, whisky and Kilt intact.
Terry - what a shame you had to leave your Lagavulin! I would have drunk the whole bottle (if my wife was on here she would say "It wouldn't be the first time!"). I love the Islay malts.
Slainte,
John

Got a WHOPPER of a surprise in the mail 2 days ago! Seems my rental car was issued a parking violation ticket, when we parked in the lot next to the train station in Fort William on Friday, July 31, for the Jacobite Train ride we rode to Mallaig and back. We were running late that morning, and were not familiar with the parking situation, and did not wish to miss the train. So we parked in the lot that has the big Morrison's Grocery Store at the east end. We parked at the far southwest end right next to the trash containers where there were practically no cars and lots of open parking spaces. The notice I received in the mail was from the car rental agency we used in Scotland - Europcar. They say that they are going to ding my credit card 50 Pounds for the parking violation, plus a 27 Pound administration fee, and a 4.05 Pound VAT fee, for a grand total of 81.05 Pounds !!! I think this is downright unfriendly, not to mention OUTRAGEOUS! We went to Scotland and spent over $6,000.00 US each, because we were INVITED by Scotland to "Come Home" and "Gather", which we did. Once there, I guess we became fair game for the parking enforcement highwaymen, and their insatiable lust for our wallets. So, I sit here and wait for the axe to fall, and the gouge to be taken out of my meagre savings via my credit card, still held hostage by the Scottish carhire we used while in Scotland. So much for a most unfortunate experience that has tinged what should have been a most memorable, and happy once-in-a-lifetime happening.

Hi Terry,
Nae luck with the parking ticket,as they say here, but the best of us get caught out once in a while.I daresay that Morrison's Supermarket have got a wee sign up somewhere in the car park explaining the limits of time for parking there, and what will happen if you exceed it.But it probobly is easy to miss seeing it(as I am sure they hope). However,it is a private car park,so they are probobly entitled to do what they want, even if it morally doesn't seem like it.
Don't blaim the Scots,or the people of Fort William, however, and let it discolour your trip to Scotland.Morrisons Supermarket is owned and run from the North of England (Yorkshire,I think),and that is where the orders to encapture errant parkers will have come from. When they first invaded Scotland about 5 years ago,in a takeover of Safeway, there were quick to stamp their mark, and many Scottish brands disappeared from the shelves..Even now it is confusing to go shopping in their supermarkets,as many of the products are not called by familiar Scottish names, but strange north of England ones.(They call turnips "swedes",and bread rolls "baps",for instance, and vigourously refuse to change them).
We can't let you be out of pocket - so we will need to have a whip-round.The £5 note in my pocket will set the ball rolling!
Cheers,Chris.

Hi Terry & Chris,
I am familiar with the parking lot you were in - and I do remember a sign about parking there - and although I can see their point in needing to keep it open for shoppers, the amount does seem excessive - and the £27 admin fee really seems like robbery. So, blame it on the English!
I also must add that I was impressed with both the amount of public parking available in Fort William, and the very reasonable rates they charge.
Interesting that Morrisons took over Safeway. We still have Safeway here in Canada - and they are thought of as a big corporate giant who goes into small communities and displaces small businesses.
A few years ago Sobeys, one of Canada's biggest grocery chains, moved into Western Canada. I heard several people comment that yet another American corporation was coming in and taking over. Ironically, Sobeys is Nova Scotia based, and started out with Frank Sobey's small grocery store in the small town of Stellarton.
And I wll close saying that although I love turnips, I would feel very odd eating a swede.
Slainte,
John

Dear Jon, Chris, and John, Thanks for your kind thoughts and commiserations. The pain of an 81.05 Pound Sterling whack out of my wallet is unfortunately not lessened. I would have thought that the good Burghers of Fort William might have made an accommodation for all the people -many from outside Scotland- attending the Clan Cameron Gathering there, and would have rolled out the hospitality/good will carpet, which might have included a temporary suspension of -or at least a lessening of enforcement for- such things as parking violations. Jon, as I indicated above, my sister and I took the Jacobite Train ride on Friday, July 31. Soryy we missed visiting. We did attend the Clan Cameron Reception in Fort William that evening, and the Saturday events at Achnacarry. We did not attend the Celeidh, unfortunately. The rainy weather, my old eyes, and my unfamiliarity with a long night drive up the single lane road to the Castle precluded our attending. On the bright side, I do have over an hour of video from the Reception, and over an hour of video from the Saturday events on the grounds of the Castle. In fact, I have over 20 hours of video taken during our 14-day stay in Scotland, including the Gathering 2009 in Edinburgh. And it all presents a splendid way to recollect our wonderful stay in Scotland! Can't wait to go again! (Will especially watch the parking restrictions next time.) Slainte! Terry

I fired off a letter of complaint this morning to the head of the Wm. Morrison Supermarkets Plc food store chain in West Yorkshire. Now we'll wait to see if he reads it/acts on it, or not. The charge to my AMEX card ($137.93 US) for the parking ticket appeared on my bill, which arrived in the mail yesterday.

In ther November 2009 issue of the Scottish Banner it reported that Oscar Winner Tilda Swinton is the 19x Greatgrand daughter of Robert the Bruce through her mother's side , and her father's side . Maybe someone you know might have an issue of the paper that you can eead for more details .
