From our Australian Clan Cameron Commissioner Dr Robert Cameron's article in our Clan Cameron Australia newsletter.....
When it was discovered by authorities that Lieut. Allan Cameron of the 18th regiment and Lieut. Donald Cameron of the 79th regiment were about to fight a duel in Hyde Park in 1797, they were forcibly dissuaded and bound to keep the peace.
A little earlier that year a Capt. Allan Cameron had argued with Ewen Cameron, Esq, of the City of London about a family debt. When he was refused, Allan Cameron’s challenge to a duel with Ewen Cameron was delivered by Colonel D. J. Cameron. No duel took place, but all ended up in court, with the combatants sentenced to a month in prison and a fine of £50 each.
Can anyone recognise any of these people as their ancestors? Any number of such stories can be found in the English newspapers now available online to those connected to the internet. Recently I have been browsing a collection of such newspapers dating from the mid 17th century. Not all are high class literature (The Times only starts from 1785, much more respectable), and the English view of the happenings of 1745 and the following years may be a little biassed (and more than a little inaccurate at times), but such things can be fascinating to read. Of course there is a good basis of fact throughout, wonderful for research

I would say that there are many connecting urls I have just Google'd British Library newspapers www.bl.uk/reshelp/index.html and the catalogues listed are many. However there appears to be a cost involved with this approach. For Australian researchers, Dr Robert Cameron tells me that access is available via a reader's card at the local library which directs you through our State Library directly to the catalogues
