I am seeking information on the birthplace and antecedents of Lt. Adj. John Archibald Cameron (born 1777 Lochaber, Argyleshire, Scotland and died by drowning in Lochaber, Lower Canada 12 April 1824).
He was married (in Oct. 1803 in Williamstown Presbyterian Church) to Susannah Cameron (Cornwall, Ontario), daughter of the Loyalists, John Cameron (Clunes) and Mary Cameron (Glennevis), who initially emigrated from Scotland to the Mohawk Valley in N. Y. on the ship PEARL in 1773, but went to Canada as a result of the American Revolution.
The youngest son of Lt. Adj. John A . and Susannah Cameron was John Archibald Cameron (1820-1899) of Stadacona Hall, Ottawa. According to his obituary in the Ottawa Daily Free Press of 15 May 1899, his father, "Adjutant John Cameron of the British Regular Army, (was) a personal friend of Gen. Sir Isaac Brock, and a hero of Chateauguay and Queenstown Heights."
Lt. Adj. John A. Cameron's assignment prior to being inactive on half pay was Adjutant of the 2nd Battalion of the Embodied Militia of Lower Canada.
His previous assignments are unknown, although it is a matter of conjecture that he could possibly have been part of the 49th (Hertfordshire) Regiment of Foot which accompanied Isaac Brock to Canada in 1802. This would make sense, especially as he was married in Canada by 1803.
I am hoping that this posting will catch the attention of someone who has a facility for research of British military records, which I think would be the most likely source of information on the background of Lt. Adj. John Archibald Cameron, originally from Lochaber, Argyllshire, Scotland.
Many thanks,
