Hello all!
New to this forum. I am decendant of Lochiel and trace my family line all the way back to one John the Merchant, who entered the US as a young boy in the mid-1700's (after Culloden, I suspect).
I have a quite a bit of info on my family lineage through the present date, and suspect I have quite a few Cameron cousins out there, as the both the Merchant and his progeny, John Worthy Cameron, were quite prolific!
Would love to hear from any and all -- esp. if you have any info on the Merchant prior to his entering the colonies.

Hi Linda,
Just found this site for the second time!!!! and noticed your message - where are all the Camerons - You've had no replies!!!
So a very belated WELCOME.
I'm told that we can trace our ancestors back to Cameron of Lochiel too - but I'm really struggling. There are so many of them out there and trying to get the info is nigh impossible!!
So are you in the States?
I've got another contact in the States that I'm talking to - not found the family connection yet - but we're still trying.
I've obviously not got back nearly as far as you but would love to chat - all family history is interesting - and you never know - way back we might find the connection.
Kind Regards
Chris

Hello and Greetings..I too am 'new here' I have to because I too am a "Lochiel" Decendant. My Ancestor arrived in Canada, after Culloden, was put on a (slave?) ship to fight in the 'New World' with General Wolfe (the same that we fought 'against' @ Culloden!)... anyway.. that was the 1750's and we have been in Canada ever since... Would be interested in finding out more about this as a lot of history records are written for 'after' that period. Please 'shed some light' if you have any information about 'Culloden Survivors' that were shipped over to continue to fight in order to be 'free' (finally)
So, perhaps Linda and Chris, we may be closer relatives than you know... check later
Mile

Hi Mile,
Sorry I've no information that could help you.
But good luck in your search. There's lots of people out there who know a lot about the Camerons - maybe one of them will read your reply.

Hello : I am also of the Lochiel line in Canada. The John the Merchant question came up about 6 montths ago on the Cameron mailing list from a body in the Carolinas, I think. If you follow that throught , you will find the answer. My Camerons were at Louisbourg and Plains of Abraham and some in the Revolutionary war and one of the descendant families is depicted in clan- cameron DNA study , Participant # 29230. I recognized it from my Gen work. Does anyone fit the bill/ Delphine Large (Cameron) new member 2006

Hi Delphine,
I am related, genetically, to participant 29230, in the Cameron DNA study ( we are -1 genetic distance). So - I would be very interested in what you have on your family history. My family did not come to Canada until around 1850 - and so were not among those who fought at Louisbourg or Quebec. I would be happy to share all that I have. Please PM or e-mail me.
Slainte,
John

Hello John: You don't recall I gather that I was in touch with your parents a few Summers back and you were then vacationing. You were going to inform me of the Alberta location in order to join Clan- Cameron. I didn't hear so joined the Ontario Branch from whence I came in 1980. My email is dlarge@shaw.ca Get in touch and we can share. So far I need a link from Peel County Charles to his parentage. He was of the Lochiels and the line that produced the Chiefs . Thanks for being in touch Delphine

Hello, Linda, This reply is about two years late, but I am wondering if John the Merchant had brothers or sisters . My relatives left Scotland for Canada and the northern US in the 1750s, I think, and the DNA tests show a relationship to others who have a John as a cpmmpn ancestor. Some of my family names are Charles, William, James-----just like everybody else. I hope you are still out there and will reply, Lisle

Hi Linda, this is several years late, but I'm curious, if you have seen the report of Paul Cameron Whitlock and his quest for the Merchant John's link back to Scotland? It is probably about 90 years old now, and he eventually determined that although Merchant John did come from Scotland, there are no records on this side of the Atlantic (usa) from whence or when he precisely came. There are a lot of cousins around here and there!
