My Uncle Vance Macdonald (Macdonalds of Rhum) always maintained that the role of the Camerons at Culloden was to make sandwiches for the Macdonalds. This of course is not true, as the Macdonalds were busy bringing the Camerons their tea when the order to charge was given - thus the true reason why Clan Donald was late in charging!

On a more topical issue for this thread - I read that the Camerons at the Battle of Killicrankie wore a blue tartan. Does anyone have any information on this? Our hunting tartan has blue in it, but could hardly be called a "blue tartan.
It is a shame so many tartans were "lost" after Culloden and the brutal repression that followed.

I voted for the hunting tartan simply because I am a Taylor and the tartan I wear is from that. I wanted to offer my two cents here on this thread... I really thought that Sherbrooke Jacobite was going to say that the McDonalds were too busy because they were frying up those taties and neeps ( or burgers and fries)! Oh.... I'm sorry... did I hear a groan out there? I couldn't resist. Sorry.

I just read on a Scottish tartan site that our hunting tartan is a fairly recent development (1930's or so?) and it was inspired by the description of the tartan worn by the Camerons when they were with Bonnie Dundee. Very interesting - it seems unlikely that we will ever know exactly what tartans our ancestors wore - other than the few examples that have survived in paintings etc. I will continue to wear the Clan Cameron tartan with pride!
Slainte,
John
As for Gaelgal's comment re/ the MacDonalds - I have been waiting for the McDonalds restaurant to come out with McHaggis, but haven't seen any yet.

Would it be possible to add "Taylor" as a choice? I'm partial to that one! Aye in Scotland, Connie Taylor McLaughlin

Personally I'm pretty fond of the "Cameron Hunting Tartan circa 1956" houseoftartan.co.uk/gifhold/1535k7Cameron.gifMainly cause I've been sleeping under a duvet cover of it since I was like 15! BTW,.. are there any other South African Cameron's on this board or am I the only one? Slainte Mhath to you all Ross Cameron of Locheil

Welcome to the family message board Ross! I don't know of any other South African Camerons here - but we have representation from Scotland, Austrailia, New Zealand, the USA & Canada (my apologies if I missed your country!). The duvet cover of Hunting tartan would be very striking - I have a tie in it, but my Kilt is the basic Clan Cameron. If I ever get (read - can afford) another, it would be the hunting.
Please don't take offense - but only members of Lochiel's immediate family should use the designation "of Lochiel".
Glad you joined us!
Slainte,
John

What about the Modern Dress? The red/black/white?? (Although it reminds of the Fraser plaid) I suppose I would lean to the classic. Anyone have any suggestions to a good site to purchase from?

I am not familiar with a red, black and white Cameron tartan. I have seen a red & black tartan that was attributed to our Clan, and was referred to as a mourning tartan. I have also seen a Fraser dress tartan that was red, balck and white. As for purchasing a Kilt (if that is what you were asking) - I would try to get to a shop that makes them so they can properly measure you. The Kilt is different from other articles of clothing, so for a good fit, it is helpful to be measured. If you can't - I can recommend a good on-line shop, whic is located on this side of the Atlantic. I am familair with their work, and what I have seen is very good. I have one of their sporrans. You can find it at: www.littlescotland.com/index.phpThey also sell tartan cloth. And by the way - Welcome to the family message board!

Thanks for the site info. I've been tracing my grandfathers family roots and I want a long hostess kilt. I also wanted the fabric for my daughters highland dance competition costume. Thanks again.

I found an awesome site that also carries cotton tartan fabric including the cameron modern. (red, green, yello) It's called the Scottishweaver.com. Check them out. They're located in SC, USA.

Since Taylor tartan is not listed, I go with Cameron Modern. I will be getting a great kilt soon and I plan to have it done in the Taylor tartan.

Hmm... why isn't the Taylor tartan listed?! It is certainly my preferred tartan, and I enjoy talking about it every time someone says "what a pretty tartan"!! Ken, as a Clark, you have a Clark tartan you can wear. It's right pretty too. You can look at tartans and ask questions about them at www.scottishtartans.org/

I actually do wear the Clark tartan, I own a kilt with that tartan... But I know the Clarks were with the Cameron of Erracht, but I wasn't sure if it's designated that noone can wear a Cameron of Lochiel tartan too even if you're a member of the clan.. Well, I guess if I do by a kilt with the Cameron of Lochiel tartan, just wear it until told not to ;D.

It's my understanding that you have to have special permission to wear the Lochiel's tartan.
