Aren't the pipes considered a weapon of war? And where's the dirk? (Remember the old saying, "Never draw a dirk when a dunt will do." In other words, don't bother with your sword if you can pop your enemy on the head with a rock or your fist.) And no sgean dhu on your list? Or teeth? (Sons of the hounds, come here and get flesh!) I do not like weapons, Tom, I do not like them at all. If I were queen, we'd have no war and all go to the ball. But if I had to scream and fight, a dirk would be my choice, held tight and close to smite the foe and let them hear my voice!!

I vote for claymores because it defines how braw and bonny our men are. I ,of course, can't lift one and they are as tall as I am but there's just something about a man in a kilt with a six FOOT sword!

the Basket Hilt Clamore are the best weapon of choice for the Highlander. So are the Martini Herni's and Enfields of the late 1880's along with broadsword. Don't forget the dirk.

A Claymore doesn't have a basket hilt (at least not that I am aware of), the sword with a basket hilt is the broadsword. A Claymore is a large sword designed to be wielded with two hands and was out of fashion by the 1700's.
I have seen reproductions incorrectly called Claymores which are actually basket hilted broadswords. During the Risings of 1715 and 1745 the Highland soldiers were armed (generally) with a musket, broadsword, targe, and dirk. (Given the nature of the Jacobite forces there was of course every manner of weapon present). The Highlanders fought with a broadsword in one hand, the targe and dirk in the other.
As for the rifles - why stop with the Lee Enfields and Martini Henri's, there are Highlanders fighting today with Heckler & Koch SA 80's & G.P.M.G.'s (If only we had some of those at Culloden!).

As one who loves weapons, most people find it interesting when they visit my home and find a single woman with a Lochaber, Claymore, Baskethilt and my personal favorite, a Crossbow hanging on the wall.
Sometimes you just have to have that "don't mess with me" attitude! It's what makes Cameron's so GREAT!

I would have to say broad sword, Although I see no sgean dhu here? I did learn to use one in college, while in a stage combat class and while working at the Renn fest here. I did have one of the men during Highland Fling ask me if I were a scot and I told him I was. A Chambers form the Cameron Clan. He laughed, (I believe that he was a Mackenzie) and said I figured as much, you have the attuide of one.

I prefer the Claymore, but have been come adept with several other scottish weapons. I have just received a Lochaber axe that I am now learning with. Since I come from the Taylor side, I felt that it was a weapon that I needed to learn. I do enjoy my baskethilt back sword and I would love to have a baskethilt broadsword. Since I am the Weapons Guy for the Down East Scottish Society, I needed to learn a little bit about all of them. The president of Society calls me her Weapons Expert. I am not quite ready for that title yet, but am getting there. I am in process of setting up a training center under the Cateran Society to learn more about using broadsword and targe and other weapons.

Welcome Eric! We are glad to have you join us here on the family message board. It has been quiet for some time now, but it will get busier from time to time. There are lots of people here to help with things like genealogy and history - and we welcome your weapons expertise!
Looking forward to your posts!

I have to say my personal weapon of choice would be the claymore accompanied by a targe and sgian dubh. Besides, as a woman carrying the above mentioned, I look pretty intimidating.... ;D

I do love the american imagination ..never ceases to make me smile, running around with a claymore on my back, doesn't work for me.....the clansmen were the finest light infantry in the world. they didn't hump useless lumps of iron everywhere...too impractical ....broadsword was plenty .....and please its a sgiandubh....blade black....

A woman with a Claymore . Just the type of person I'm looking for . A person who fights for what they believe in . No matter whether they're men , or women . To me I think more women should learn how to fight because that will probably be the only way they can protect themselves . If she wants to learn how to fight , I say let her . You'll never know she just might save her own life , or the life of someone she loves . Has anyone one else have an opion on women learning on how to fight ? I for one would like to hear them .

To anyone that's interested I have a copy of Scottish Firearms of the 15th 16th , and 17th Centuries , taken from A Hisstory of Eourpean Firearms of the 15th , 16 , and 17th Centuries . If anyone would like too have this copy for their reference material . I would be happy to send it to you. Since I have the original book I would be happy to check out other Eourpean Firearms of the same time period , and Mike (highlandladdie) I would be willing to look to see if the book has information on German Firearms of the time period mentioned . If I do happen to find such information would you like me to send it to you ? Please let me know one way , or another . Jon
