It is probably best to give a brief genealogical history first to show how the the Cameron family arrived in the village of Fort Augustus.
Neil Cameron marries a Catharine McPhee on 8 April 1849 and they have an extensive family of which, one is Donald or Daniel Cameron. Niel was a flesher in Fort William High Street, and Catherine's family were carpenters and Timber merchants at Corpach. Maybe even Ship's Carpenters or builders. Neil dies in Inverness 16 December 1890 aged around 66 years according the Death Certificate. Catherine died in 1892 at 3 Celt Street,
Children of NEIL CAMERON and KATE MCPHEE are:
EWAN or Hugh CAMERON, b. 1850, Kilmallie Parish;
MARY CAMERON, b. 1852, Kilmallie Parish.
CATHERINE CAMERON, b. 1853, Kilmallie Parish.
JOAN CAMERON, b. 1856, Kilmallie Parish.
ANGUS CAMERON, b. 15 Mar 1858, Kilmallie Parish, Argyll.
JANE CAMERON, b. 1860, Kilmallie Parish.
SARAH CAMERON, b. 01 Dec 1861, Kilmallie Parish.
MARY ANN CAMERON, b. 13 Nov 1863, Kilmallie Parish.
3. DONALD ( DAN) CAMERON, b. 21 Jul 1865, Kilmallie Parish,
MARGARET CAMERON, b. 03 Apr 1868, Kilmallie Parish
Due to various trading factors, Niel and Catherine are forced into insolvency and at one point in the Census they are on a croft at Achintore. This extensive family move through economic necessity to Kinmylies Inverness where Niel (sic) becomes head shepherd.
Donald or Daniel Cameron, (the son of Niel), a Seaman, aged 25, marries Isabella McDonald 21 years, on 21 April 1896 at 3 Celt Street Inverness. The usual address for Isabella is Blairconnard, Fort Augustus where her father James MacDonald was a gamekeeper/Coachman/estate Worker. The witnesses to the wedding are James MacDonald ( Dally's) and Mary Ann Cameron, Daniel’s sister. Isobel's family resided at what was probably a tied cottage at Blairconnard, Fort Augustus. The house called Tor na Brachd, which became important for my grandmother Elizabeth, is believed to be situated somewhere near Auchteraw, Fort Augustus, on Oich Bank and the name could be the Hill of the Wolf, or it could be Hill of the Badger.
Dan Cameron worked on the British Waterways boat that plied the canal. The boat was the MV Scot 1. It is the tradition he became mate or captain. ( His brother Hugh was also captain of the Steamer Glengarry that plied the Canal between Banavie and Fort Augustus.) Old Dan later became the Lock-keeper and resided at what is now the British Waterways Museum at No 1 Canal Cottages Fort Augustus. He was followed in that job, by his son John or Johnny Cameron, who was also a renowned and expert salmon fisherman.
Elizabeth Cameron my grandmother was born 1899 at Wood Cottage, Fort Augustus. She is buried at Boleskine Cemetery under her married name MacLaren. .
Donald/Dan and Isabella, also produce Neil, Donald ( Danny) John, Margaret, Angus, James, Alan, Ewen, and Catherine
It was said that the Fort Augustus shinty team had most of the males from the Cameron family in the side at one point. My father, Frank Cameron the son of Lizzie , told me of how he stayed at Fountain Cottage which I think was at one time a British Waterways house, and sometimes the large family had to sleep on a barge moored in the canal. My father disliked that immensely because it had mice or rats.
Does anyone recogise this large family who worked and lived on the Canal, or eventually spread far and wide? Does anyone know of who Niel's father and mother might be ? His father was " Hugh" and that is all I have on that. Niel must have been born around 1824.
