I say the wearing of tartan should be done with pride . IT IS NOT A COSTUME , IT IS A SYMBLE OF A PROUD NATION !!!,

Laphroaig 13,
The family tartan would be the Lochiel tartan in any of its versions (modern, ancient, weathered). If you're interested in Cameron Hunting, that's typically listed as a different tartan. Then there's the basic Clan Cameron, which is worn by many, and the Cameron of Erracht, both in all their different versions (modern, ancient, weathered). The best of luck in your choice - there are many to choose from!

Is it a good deal to buy a kilt at the highland games, or is it a better deal to buy a kilt from a store? Do you get fit better in person at the highland games or is it ok to send in yor measurements

For those who would like to check out more sites for information on buying a kilt also try j.higgins.net , and scottishlion.com They have a site for both U. S. , Canadian customers depending on where you live .

I second what Pops/Jon/Ian states or writes. Both are very reputable and I have personal experience with both. Either one ya can't go wrong ! I must say though that J. Higgins will probably be better on pricing. Again I've used both and I would recommend them to everyone! My family and I have been a customer of the Scottish Lion since the early 70's (starting about 1971) when they had their Shop and Bed n Breakfast in North Conway, New Hampshire. I really miss staying there it was a fantastic Bed n Breakfast. It made you feel right at home in the middle of the Highlands ! I purchased a kilt from J. Higgins over a year or so ago and I would definitely use em agin ;D! Good luck in your decision. The Highland Games are nice for wee little trinkets and the like, but I wouldn't be buying my kilt there unless it was for a party and I wanted to look Scottish and didn't mind it getting wrecked. Although their are some shops that will have a tent at the games and are reputable, but always do your homework and check them out. Never get off the rack. That's what I mean by not buying a kilt at the Games. Always go with a shop and one that's got a solid reputation. Also always have some one take the measurements for you. If you need help wit what you need for measurements, give us a shout. Yours Aye, Sean

Hello again Cameroning, In your previous post you mentioned if it's OK to send in your measurements. The answer is absolutely. On both websites www.jhiggins.net and www.scottishlion.com they will provide you with a measurement form letting you know all the necessary measurements to take. Remember though to have someone else take the measurements for you ( friend, Mom,you get the idea) it doesn't have to be a professional tailor. One reason for this is when taking the measurement for length of the kilt. If you are measuring from navel to above knee or middle of knee (your preference) if you are stooping over to read the measurement it will not be correct. Just have a good tape measure on hand and always triple check all measurements and your kilt will come to you wit a perfect fit. Remember also that although their is a good lot of Cameron Tartans to choose from, the Cameron of Lochiel and all it's variations are specifically for our Great Chief and his immediate Family, no exceptions. Good luck in your choice and let us know how you made out. Oh, also when picking out your kilting fabric (Tartan) go with the heaviest worsted wool you can afford. I would suggest getting no less than 13oz. . Some tartans though are only offered in limited weights. Again good luck and if you have any further questions please do not hesitate to ask. Yours Aye, Sean

After receiving an very nice letter from Lochiel, I have changed my kilt order from Lochiel Modern to Cameron Ancient.
I look forward to wearing it with pride.
Thanks to everyone for the help they have given me with this. But for this forum I may have gone to Achnacarry wearing a kilt that could have caused embarrassment to myself.
Thank you all again

I disapprove of calling the Cameron tartan the basic tartan. It is the Cameron Tartan, then there are also the Cameron hunting, Lochiel, Erracht, dress etc in modern, ancient, weathered, muted modern, and muted ancient.
There is an earlier variation on the Cameron tartan that has two yellow lines, each nearer the green. I hope to find that variation in the future.
It is my understanding that in Scotland you cannot wear the Lochiel tartan, but that it is not enforced in the USA and many Camerons, especially Cameron women have selected that tartan as looking best for their skin and eye color. We therefore accept the Lochiel tartan while not recommending it to others who are still looking for a tartan.

I have just picked up my new kilt and am ready for the Gathering in July. I decided to go with Cameron of Erracht and have also ordered one in the Cameron Ancient.
Thanks for everyone's advice on this as if I hadn't been on this excellent forum I probably would have unwittingly ordered Lochiel and that would have been of great embarrasment to me in July.
Thanks again everyone!
