i traveled the highlands and hebrides of scotland in 2000. i met with lochiel as well in 2000 at achnacarry. we had a great time together. nice man he was.
when i traveled scotland i stayed in both b&b's and hostels. to be honest i really enjoyed the time spent in hostels as you meet folk from all over the world. i have stayed in many more during my marathon travels as well in north america, all with great reviews.
for those that know about hostels i don't need to tell you, for those that don't so be it, i will let you know that hostels are wonderful, economical and more, offering a wide variety of ages that stay in hostels, couples and families too. you can room is hostel accommodations with your peers or as couples or family accommodations. great kitchen facilities are to be had as well and more. regardless, to each their own.
for those going to the gathering '09 have fun. wow, scotland sure is going to be a crowded spot in '09 in light of all the gatherings going on.
fyi, while in fort william i stayed at http://www.syha.org.uk/SYHA/Web/Site/Hostels/GlenNevis.asp great location to hiking ben nevis (500 metres) it was, close to fort william 4km as well as close to achnacarry 20km. fyi, i hired a car for my entire time. great deal it was. approx. 1500 kms traveled.
i stayed in several hostels while in scotland. it was memorable. i stayed in only two b&b's. if you wish more details so be it, send me a note.
slainte, scott
