Well Tom & Allan.

If we are to have a Cameron Bard, then should it not be one of our own whom we place first….Mary (Cameron) Gilmore:

Mary Jean Gilmore is one of us, one of those who descended from Camerons who migrated here to Australia as part of the Highland Immigration Scheme in 1839

Her Grandfather Ewen (Hugh) Cameron, was born in 1799 in Kilmallie, he arrived here as a shepherd with wife and children on "Boyne", 1839 and worked as a Bounty Migrant for Macarthur's at Camden Park

His sons settled properties in New South Wales. Mary's father Donald Cameron, was born 15 Sep 1835, Fort William and is described as "The restless Scottish sawmiller and builder"
m. 21 Jun 1864, "Maryvale", Cotta Walla, nr Goulburn, Mary Ann Beattie Richmond, NSW, their daughter Mary Jean Cameron, was born on 16 Aug 1865

Her life spanned nearly a century and she spoke in a voice that understood those early Australian pioneers, she tried to pass on their emotions to a world that even now can not comprehend the loneliness and isolation that these Scots felt in a land so different, so dry and so barren from the soft grasses and sounds of Lochaber.

Her verses spread these basic elements of the Australian ethos into our twentieth century literature and in 1937 she was made a Dame of the British Empire for her services to Australia
She is described as Teacher, Reformer and Poet.

HERITAGE by Mary Gilmore
Not of ourselves are we free,
Not of ourselves are we strong;
The fruit is never the tree,
Nor the singer the song.

Out of temptation old, so old
The story hides in the dark Untold,
In some far, dim, ancestral hour
There is our root of power.

The strength we give is the strength we make;
And the strength we have is the strength we take,
Given us down from the long-gone years,
Cleansed in the salt of others' tears.

The fruit is never the tree,
Nor the singer the song;
Not of ourselves are we free,
Not of ourselves are we strong

: SON OF THE HOUND:
O' son of the hound,
Whaur are ye bound?
Camerons all,
Answered Lochiel's call.
Reivers frae the lowlands they came.
We fight to protect oor hames.
Sounds of war-pipes echoing through ben, moors, & glen,
Claymores, dirks, & targes in the hands of Cameron's men.
Til the reivers they did route,
The men of Lochiel, Victory they did shout, but some lay dying, &
dead. While mothers, widows, & sweethearts by their side with
tears they did shed.
Let us remember that these braw young lads died not for honour, &
fame,
They died to protect their hame.

If anyone has the time I realy would like to see SON OF THE HOUND written out in Gaelic , and posted on the board. even though I do not know much Gaelic , I think it be a nice additionto the board. I was thinking as an event for the Clan Cameron Gathering have the SON OF THE HOUND read out loud in English , and then again in Gaelic I would like to know what others think of this. To make sure I can find the Gaelic version of SON OF THE HOUND in Gaelic , could the heading be SON OF THE HOUND Gaelic version?

I love a lass,,.
who's full of brass.
One who speaks her mind,
If she needs to get someones attention,
She's not afraid to kick their behind.
No wishy-washy lass for me,
I would like her to be a strong self assured woman for all the world to see.
She's no flake,
She can handle give, & take.
For those who can't respect her for who she is doesn't deserve her.
For prior to the reign of Queen Victoria men & women of Scotland were equeal in all ways.

A Scot on a hill
The sun at his back
He'd be there still
Had he not got the sack
He played and he played
And the song it went round
From heaven to fade
Back into the ground.

I'm no wishy-washy MacIntosh .
A Cameron is for me to be

To the islands , and highlands of bonnie Scotland I go ,
The bens so high covered in snow .
Where a red-haired lassie is waiting for me,
Even though she has a temper that might last from September to December ,
It's the highlands is where I wish I could live until I die For there is no other place I'd rather be .

On the bens so high .
Above my lass an' I a Royal Blue sky .
With such fine weather ,
My lass an' I lay upon the Purple Heather .
Watching the clouds go by .
The sky so clear ,
The Roe Deer so unafraid , and near .
It's getting near twilight now , and so proud the Roe Deer Stag , the true Lord of the Highlands makes his stand ,
As he placed his velvet soft lips in my lassie's hand .

THE GATHERING
Lochiel orders the Firey Cross to be lit across the highlands . some Camerons come from near and far off lands
To answer Lochiel's call,
the blood of our forefathers flow through our veins , WE ARE CAMERONS ONE AND ALL!!!
Do you hear that ? It's the bagpipes calling us back home .
From all over the world the Camerons did roam .
The clan is together again , even if it is for a short while ,
in the years ahead when we think of the friends we've made , and the good times we've had , we do so with a smile .

SCOTLAND!!!
From the Isle of Skye to the Lowlands ,Islands , Borders , and Highlands .
The land of Bagpipes , Clans , Tartans , lovely lassies , and gallant men,
Who in times past fought to protect their glen . In celebrations they do so with the humble Haggis along with Tatties , Neeps , & Whisky . In which a Scotsman couldn't ask for a finer meal .,
Call out thebagpipes , drums , and fiddle , we'll be dancing the Highland Fling , Strathspeys , and Reels Til the wee hours of the night,
Oh it was a a delight to see such a glorious sight .
To see one , and all so happy , & gay,
but now we have to get ready for another day.

This one is different . It's about the state I live in.
NEBRASKA
From the dark fertile fields of the East to the dry Sandhills of the Panhandle , and West.Where the Whooping Crane rest , then flys by , and the Sandhill Crane makes its nest .
The Magestic American Bison Lord of the open plain.,
Stands steadfast against drought , blizzards , and rain .
The people here are the most generious you'll ever meet ready to help others at the drop of a hat ,
and if you ever meet them on their own terms . they'll take the time to have a little chat .
Some of us might seem a little cold , and standoffish , but once we get to know you , you'll have a friend for life ,
Who'll stand with you in all sorts of strife.

My Scottish blood stands proud
I sing loud from the mountain cloud
Ben Nevis, my peak of joy
Hiking up from dear Glen Roy

On the path I spot a lark
Whose call projects from morning dark
It takes wing when I stroll by
Sharing its Lochaber cry

Ice and fog are my reward
As I make my way skyward
And as the sun crests
On the summit a clansman rests

Coming down is no true joy
As my legs direct toward Glen Roy
My saga nears it finish
But memories live on of Ben Nevis

They come from far off lands these people of Clan Cameron . Back to Bonny Scotland .
From their native lands , back to the highlands .
From the North , South , Easdt , & West,
Clan Cameron stands above the rest !!!
In Scotland at the gathering they join their fellow Clansmen that live among the moors , ben , & glen .
